I am a second year Solicitor Apprentice at Martin Tolhurst Solicitors, currently sat within the Litigation team at the firm’s Gillingham office.

From an early age I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in law and was fortunate enough to undertake a weeks’ work experience at Martin Tolhurst when I was in year 12 which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I began looking into the routes of how to qualify as a solicitor. From my research I discovered that the solicitor apprenticeship as a path to qualification incorporates the degree qualification, Solicitor Qualifying Exams and practical experience in the workplace. For me, this was the perfect route I loved the idea of gaining six years of practical real-life experience across a range of sectors and working alongside studying rather than going down the traditional route of university.

Since starting at Martin Tolhurst Solicitors I have been surrounded by a team of supportive colleagues whom have provided me with the knowledge and support to effectively undertake my role at the firm.

Within my first year I was placed in an admin role within the conveyancing department, I assisted the conveyancing department with tasks such as file opening and closing, and I acted as the first point of contact for any clients attending the office. This seat gave me an understanding of the conveyancing process as well as a valuable insight into case management and compliance.

Within the litigation department, I have the opportunity to undertake tasks such as drafting legal documents, observing client meetings and attending Court. I have particularly enjoyed working on Financial Remedy on Divorce cases whereby an analytical approach is required.

As an Apprentice I have one day a week designated to my studies which I usually take on a Wednesday. Using this time, I have successfully completed a number of assessments through my training provider, BPP University, which will form part of my overall grade for my Law degree. I have found that this arrangement works well and I am able to structure my study time effectively using the online webinars and course materials provided.

I have regular check-ins with my supervisor and a progress review each term with both my supervisor and my coach at BPP. These allow me to review the work I have undertaken and the skills that I have developed. I then set targets for areas of focus both academically and within the workplace.

I look forward to progressing further during my time at Martin Tolhurst and continuing to develop the skills and knowledge required to be a successful solicitor.
